How To Spool A Baitcast Fishing Reel Using Facebook Messages

Last fall, I bought myself a fancy new fishing rod and reel. It’s been a learning experience since the get-go. First, I didn’t know fishing poles were shipped in such giant cartons.

To give you an idea of how big this is, I’m 5’4”. Inside the house, it almost touches my ceiling.

The last time I bought a new fishing rod, I took it to a sports shop to have the line spooled onto the reel. Turns out you can do it yourself, and it’s not that hard to do. In fact, someone can walk you through the steps via Facebook message. I’ll prove it.

First, you need some supplies. My friend already knew I had the rod and the reel, so I just needed to grab the fishing line & a pencil.

The first step is the obvious part – threading the line through the line guides on the pole towards the reel (so from the top down).

Step 2 was a little more complicated. He send me a photo so I could see exactly what he was talking about. I added the arrow to help show what he’s describing.

I thought this sounded easy enough, but I then I realized I was confused about what “around the spool of the reel” meant, so I clarified.

This is what my reel looked like after this step.

Step 3 involved actually spooling the line.

It was much easier than I thought. I mean, all I had to do was stick the pencil behind my knees.

Then I stuck the rod between my legs (I know, I know, but how else would you describe it?).

To wind the line onto the spool, I just reeled away like I normally would. It took less than 5 minutes and I was done.

Now I just need some good weather so I can get out and go fishing!
